SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Changes When AI Answers First

SEO ranks you, AEO makes you the answer, GEO gets you cited by AI. A plain guide to the three layers of modern search and where to start.

TL;DR / The short answer

SEO gets your pages ranked in search results. AEO gets a passage of your page picked as the direct answer, like a featured snippet. GEO gets your brand named and cited inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. They stack: GEO and AEO only work on top of solid SEO.

Search used to be one game. You typed a query, Google showed ten blue links, and the job was to be one of them, ideally the first.

Now the same question gets answered in at least three places: the classic results, a featured snippet or AI Overview sitting above them, and a full conversation inside ChatGPT or Perplexity. Each of these has its own rules. That is where the three acronyms come from.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the work of getting your pages to rank in search results. It covers three areas:

  • Technical SEO: can search engines crawl, render and index your pages? Think sitemaps, canonical tags, redirects and Core Web Vitals.
  • On-page SEO: does each page clearly match what the searcher wants? Titles, headings, content, internal links.
  • Off-page SEO: do other sites trust you enough to link to you?

SEO is still the foundation. Everything below depends on it.

What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is about becoming the answer, not just a result. The target is a specific passage of your page that a search engine lifts and shows directly: a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, a voice assistant reply or a line in Google AI Overviews.

What makes a page AEO friendly:

  1. Headings phrased as the real question, for example “How long does a technical SEO audit take?”
  2. A direct answer of 40 to 60 words right under that heading.
  3. Supporting detail after the answer, not before it.
  4. Structured data such as FAQPage that matches the visible text.

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about getting your brand mentioned and cited inside answers that AI models write. When someone asks ChatGPT “who is a good technical SEO freelancer”, GEO is the reason your name appears in the reply with a link.

GEO adds a few things on top of SEO and AEO:

  • AI crawler access. Many sites block GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot in robots.txt without realising it.
  • Entity clarity. Organization and Person schema, consistent facts across the web and sameAs links help models know exactly who you are.
  • Machine friendly formats. An llms.txt file and clean Markdown versions of key pages make your content cheap for agents to read.
  • Quotable content. Clear definitions, original numbers and honest comparisons are what generative engines like to cite.

How the three fit together

SEO AEO GEO
Goal Rank in results Be the direct answer Be cited by AI
Where it shows Blue links Snippets, PAA, voice, AI Overviews ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude
Key signal Relevance and authority Clear, structured answers Trust, entities, quotability
Measured in Rankings and clicks Snippet wins Mentions and citations

The order matters. A page that is not indexed cannot be a snippet. A brand that never ranks rarely gets cited. So the practical sequence is: fix SEO, structure for AEO, then extend into GEO.

Where to start this week

  1. Open Google Search Console and check the Pages report for anything “Discovered, currently not indexed”.
  2. Read your robots.txt and confirm you are not blocking AI crawlers you actually want.
  3. Pick your three most valuable pages and add one question based heading with a direct answer to each.

That is a small start, and it moves you in all three engines at once.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Most AI assistants ground their answers in live search results, so pages that rank well are the pages AI tends to cite. GEO adds AI crawler access, entity clarity and quotable content on top of SEO.

Which should a small business start with?

Start with technical SEO and on-page basics, then restructure your key pages for AEO with direct answers. GEO work pays off most once those foundations are in place.

How do I know if AI tools mention my brand?

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions your buyers ask, note whether your brand appears or is cited, and repeat monthly. In GA4, watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.
